The Dillinger Escape Plan
Weinman co-founded The Dillinger Escape Plan in New Jersey during the 1990s and became the central composer and guitarist behind the band’s intensely complex sound.
The group combined hardcore, metal, punk, electronics and experimental structures. Its concerts became famous for their physical extremity, while the music required exceptional timing and control beneath the movement.
By 2017, The Dillinger Escape Plan was completing its final touring period before entering an extended hiatus. Weinman was therefore moving out of one of the most demanding live projects in heavy music when the opportunity to perform with The Prodigy arose.
Joining The Prodigy in 2017
The Prodigy needed live guitar and bass support after Rob Holliday’s departure from the touring line-up. Several musicians appeared during that transitional period, including Olly Burden and Ben Weinman.
Weinman’s first clearly documented concert with The Prodigy took place at the Clockenflap festival in Hong Kong on 18 November 2017.
The performance placed him inside a very different technical system from The Dillinger Escape Plan. Instead of navigating music built around a full rock-band arrangement, he had to find space within Liam Howlett’s programmed beats, electronic bass, samples and carefully controlled live structures.
Guitar Inside a Prodigy Show
The live guitar in The Prodigy does not function as a continuous lead instrument. It appears where it can increase the pressure, reproduce an important riff or add a physical edge to the electronic production.
Weinman’s experience made him well suited to that discipline. His playing had always involved rhythm, texture and sudden impact rather than conventional soloing alone.
He also understood that visual energy could not come at the expense of accuracy. A Prodigy performance may feel uncontrolled from the audience, but the samples, programmed elements, vocals and live instruments must remain tightly connected.
A Short but Distinctive Association
Weinman should be described as a former live guitarist and bassist rather than a studio collaborator or full member of The Prodigy.
No reliable album credits reviewed for this biography establish that he wrote, produced or recorded material for the group. His documented contribution belongs to the stage during 2017.
The role was brief, but it linked The Prodigy with one of the most technically adventurous guitarists in modern heavy music at a moment when both acts were undergoing major change.
Work Beyond The Prodigy
Outside The Dillinger Escape Plan, Weinman has worked across a range of projects including Giraffe Tongue Orchestra and Suicidal Tendencies. He has also composed for screen projects and collaborated with musicians from metal, punk and experimental music.
That range reflects the same refusal to remain inside one category that made his short Prodigy connection believable. He was not being asked to turn the group into a metal band. He was being asked to apply his control, attack and adaptability within The Prodigy’s own live language.
Ben Weinman’s Place in Prodigy History
Ben Weinman’s time with The Prodigy was a short chapter rather than a defining period of the band.
Its significance lies in the calibre and character of the musician involved. During a gap in the live line-up, The Prodigy brought in a guitarist whose own work had redefined what extreme live performance could look and sound like.
For a brief period in 2017, the controlled chaos of The Dillinger Escape Plan met the electronic pressure of The Prodigy.
