The Prodigy in New Zealand

From a packed Big Day Out crowd in Auckland in 1997 to a new generation of fans at Electric Avenue in Christchurch in 2025, The Prodigy’s New Zealand live history spans nearly three decades.

This archive brings together every New Zealand performance we have been able to verify, including the date, event, venue, story behind the show and the best available set list. Records from the earliest concerts are not always complete. Where a full set list cannot be confirmed, we have said so rather than filling the gaps with songs performed elsewhere on the tour.

Six of the seven performances took place in Auckland. The band’s 2025 appearance at Electric Avenue marked their first concert in Christchurch.

    The Prodigy’s first New Zealand performance took place at the 1997 Big Day Out, during the period in which the band was moving from underground rave phenomenon to one of the most recognisable live acts in the world.

    With “Firestarter” already having transformed the group’s public profile, the Auckland audience encountered a band whose electronic production, punk presentation and physical stage performance stood apart from almost everything else on the festival bill. New Zealand music writer Simon Sweetman later remembered The Prodigy as one of the day’s major spectacles, describing the sense of seeing the band at its peak while its biggest singles were dominating popular culture.

    Only four songs from the performance have been preserved in public set-list records. They should be presented as a surviving fragment of the show rather than a complete set list.

    Almost exactly one year after their first New Zealand appearance, The Prodigy returned to Auckland for a dedicated headline concert inside The Supertop at Ericsson Stadium.

    The show belonged fully to the Fat of the Land era and gave the band considerably more room than a festival appearance to present the scale and intensity of its live production. Australian alternative-rock band Regurgitator joined the tour as support.

    The wider run had originally been planned as part of the Starbait concert series, an event promoted by the organisers of Big Day Out. Although the proposed Starbait series was cancelled, The Prodigy and Regurgitator continued with their Australasian dates, including the Auckland concert.

    No running order has been located for this performance. Two specialist Prodigy concert archives record the event but explicitly state that a set list is not available.

    The Prodigy returned to Big Day Out in 2002 with a performance that captured the band in a fascinating transitional period. Alongside established tracks such as “Breathe”, “Poison”, “Firestarter” and “Smack My Bitch Up”, the set introduced Auckland to new and still-evolving material.

    “Trigger”, “Little Goblin”, “Nuclear” and “Baby’s Got a Temper” showed Liam Howlett testing a rougher musical direction in front of a festival audience. Some of these tracks would subsequently change, remain unreleased or occupy only a brief place in the band’s catalogue.

    The show opened with an “Army March” introduction before moving directly into “Their Law”. A contemporary audience review recalled the intense reaction to the opening sequence, the weight of the bass during “Smack My Bitch Up” and the crowd’s familiarity with “Breathe” and “Firestarter”. The performance ended with “Fuel My Fire” as the sole encore. The concert archive also records Kieron Pepper on drums and the return of Jim Davies on live guitar.

  4. The Prodigy at Big Day Out Auckland 2009

    Seven years after their previous New Zealand show, The Prodigy returned to Big Day Out with a set that connected their established live catalogue with the beginning of the Invaders Must Die era.

    The album had not yet been released, allowing the Auckland crowd to hear newer material including “World’s on Fire”, “Omen”, “Warrior’s Dance”, “Run With the Wolves” and “Take Me to the Hospital” before the record arrived later that year. Those tracks sat naturally alongside “Their Law”, “Breathe”, “Firestarter”, “Voodoo People” and “Smack My Bitch Up”.

    The performance also incorporated short links and alternate live arrangements rather than operating as a straightforward sequence of album versions. A dubstep reworking followed “Breathe”, “Action Radar” connected sections of the main set, and the encore used fragments of “Diesel Power” and “Your Love” before finishing with “Out of Space”. It was both a preview of the band’s next chapter and a concentrated festival set built around some of their most effective live material.

    Does It Offend You, Yeah?

    A little over a year after Big Day Out, The Prodigy returned for a full Auckland headline concert built around Invaders Must Die.

    British electronic-rock band Does It Offend You, Yeah? opened the evening before The Prodigy began with “World’s on Fire”. The main set moved between newer tracks such as “Omen”, “Thunder”, “Warrior’s Dance”, “Run With the Wolves” and the album’s title track, and older crowd favourites including “Breathe”, “Poison”, “Firestarter” and “Voodoo People”.

    A contemporary review described an increasingly hot and animated arena, with Maxim directing the audience while Keith Flint moved relentlessly across the stage. During “Smack My Bitch Up”, Maxim attempted to get almost the entire floor to crouch down before the track’s release, although much of the crowd was reportedly too busy dancing to cooperate.

    The extended closing sequence travelled back through the band’s history, combining “Take Me to the Hospital” with “Diesel Power”, “Out of Space” and a final performance of “Their Law”.

  6. No Tourists Tour – Auckland 2019

    The Prodigy returned to New Zealand in February 2019 after an absence of almost nine years, bringing the No Tourists tour to The Trusts Arena in Auckland.

    The concert opened with “Breathe” and moved rapidly through three decades of material. Newer tracks such as “Resonate”, “Champions of London”, “Need Some1”, “Light Up the Sky”, “We Live Forever” and “Timebomb Zone” appeared alongside “Omen”, “Voodoo People”, “Firestarter”, “No Good” and “Take Me to the Hospital”.

    A review published the following morning described Liam Howlett operating from his industrial-style bank of equipment while Maxim and Keith Flint prowled the front of the stage. The live drummer and guitarist added further weight to the electronic production, while the crowd brought together longtime ravers, rock fans and people encountering the band for the first time.

    The concert later assumed a significance no one present could have anticipated: it became Keith Flint’s final live performance with The Prodigy. It should be remembered respectfully, not only for that historical fact, but as a committed, full-strength performance by the complete live group.

  7. The Prodigy at Electric Avenue 2025

    Twenty-eight years after their first New Zealand performance, The Prodigy finally played Christchurch.

    The band closed the Park Stage on the second night of Electric Avenue 2025, the first edition of the festival to operate across two days. Their 17-track performance drew from every major period of the catalogue, opening with “Breathe” and “Voodoo People” before moving through “Omen”, “Everybody in the Place”, “Firestarter”, “Poison”, “No Good”, “Their Law” and “Invaders Must Die”.

    During “Firestarter”, a black-and-white image of Keith Flint appeared on the stage screen as green lasers cut into the night above Hagley Park. The moment acknowledged his continuing place in the band’s history without stopping the momentum of the performance.

    The set demonstrated how The Prodigy’s music had passed between generations. Fans who remembered the group’s 1990s peak were joined by a younger festival audience encountering the songs as current live music rather than nostalgia. The encore ended with “Out of Space”, bringing the band’s first Christchurch concert to a fitting close.
